Cognos Software Packaging

Way back in the day, before IBM bought Cognos - well like 15 years before that.

Final Work

Cognos Software Packaging

This was early in my photoshop experience. We got to create several ‘scenarios’ over the course of the project. The images were used on some software packaging by Cognos. Lot’s of learning was aquired during this project as it was still early in my Photoshop travels.

It’s amazing what you can accomplish with scale models and a full photography studio at your disposal. We assistants had a great and frustrating time creating the worlds the photographers were after. Moon dust it turns out (at least through the lens is much like super fine high quality cement. 9 bags of the dust producing stuff was used to create the moon’s surface. We sifted and sifted the cement for days and with many trials and errors found a technique to make the little craters and dimples on the Moon. The footprints were created with a foam core created sole of a shoe.

The tall ship was another challenge. The high seas are actually a 5x5 foot water table. We assistants practiced making waves in our off hours.

The helicopter is a 5 inch model that we photographed in the studio. Then we set out to find the perfect skyline, stock to the rescue.
The rotors caused me a lot of grief; the client was quite picky about the blur, but I got it eventually.

The Concord of course is a model. I don’t think the real one ever came to Ottawa, so recreate it we did.

Overall this was one of the most memorable projects I’ve had the pleasure to work on.
