About Me

Currently going by the alias ‘Dad” or “Papa” Steph Boudreau is a freelance Imageer in Ottawa, Ontario Canada.
I’m the stay at home dad of 3 school aged children. When I’m not cooking, reading stories or otherwise entertaining the little ones, I can most likely be found at my computer, hopefully working on a project involving images, big images.
I love big. Big tvs, big computers, big music. But most of all I love big photos. While studying commercial photography in college (the old 4x5 and 35mm film based kind of photography. I wasn’t so much focused on taking the best picture, but more so on how to make a picture look it’s best when blown up to large proportions. I went through boxes and boxes of 16x20 printing paper. Good thing there were student discounts and our processing chemicals were covered by the enrolment fee. Still I had to do odd jobs to pay for the experimentation. While learning traditional photography at school I was embracing the new digital possibilities of computers and PhotoShop at home in the evenings. While Photoshop 3 had just come out, I only had access to version 2 (no layers) but it was enough to get my skills up and running.
After graduating from a Commercial Photography program, the 35mm and 4x5 film based kind of photography I headed out into the big bad world of digital imaging. My first job in the Photography field was in a Commercial Photography studio where I quickly let it be known that I knew computers and Photoshop and should be entrusted with these tasks rather than the heavy lifting and hot light touching work of the other assistants.
I lucked into a job in the exhibit design dept. of a National Museum, where I found out that exhibit designers liked to use big images. But the images they use in museums come from old technology, they are not of the studio quality I was used to seeing. I jumped right into to developing my own techniques of getting the best results from poor quality references. The images often come from 35mm film and/or very old prints (I’ve even scanned glass negatives).
So here we are now. Images are my life, everyday, I touch an image in some way, shape or form, from taking photos, to retouching family portraits, I like to spend time in my favourite application, Photoshop.
To keep things fresh and to use both sides of my brain, I also do small business websites and various other things including animations and sound effects.
Please feel free to say hi or better yet, offer an image based project.
