EDC Video Business Cards

Final Work
This project was a great challenge. I was tasked with creating a video player that would show video business cards and display relevant information of various EDC’s employees.
One of the main requirements was the use of one video player so as not to have duplicate files. The client also wanted a straightforward and painless way to create maintain and serve his videos. I chose Flash and XML technologies to make this project work.
The video player loads each individual employees information when it is first clicked by a site visitor. Each employee has an associated XML file that contains their relevant information. When an employees video business card is requested, EDC’s servers dynamically create a flashvars variable that our video player uses to load the correct information for the requested employee.
Another requirement was the the video player display the correct language. Being a Crown Corporation, everything must be presented in both official languages (english and french). As you will see, the video player updates based on the flashvars variable generated by EDC’s server.
Many considerations were given as to whether or not to use individual XML files (1 for each employee) or one large file containing all employees. Individual files were chosen for reasons that include: each of updating/editing information, with 1 file per employee it was much easier to track changes and have up-to-date or custom information as each employee could update their personal file easily.
Here are a few of the videos.
